In your copious amounts of free time, you should check out the website Project Euler.
It is a collection of mathematical problems, ranging from very simple to incredibly difficult. I’ve found these problems are great for brushing up on my programming skills, giving to motivated students, or working on during conferences with your new friends. Have fun!
The first teaching assignment I had was for a course called “Calculus for Life Sciences.” This course was a baptism of fire in basic calculus, studying limits, derivatives, integrals and their applications, and the students who took this course were biology, business, forestry and exercise science majors. Once I read the assignment, the anxiety hit me like a freight train; my students are going to absolutely hate me. It has been my experience, through friends and tutoring, that people who choose to go into these fields abhor math and all possible application. Before my first class started, my office mates who taught the course wished me luck with my students hating me. This feeling was exacerbated by the fact that when I walked in on the first day, I felt that I was the devil to many of my students.

Last month, I posted about how to publish a paper. Shortly thereafter, I submitted a paper and found that the process was not exactly like I said it would be. I wrote that you should send a PDF of your paper to an editor of the journal with a short explanatory note. However, when I did this, he wrote back and pointed out that articles must be submitted online!

Mathematics is a fundamentally collaborative discipline and as such, travel to conferences and workshops is an important part of any young mathematician's professional development. The only catch is that travel can be expensive (especially when leaving the country). Most graduate students I know have limited resources so the obvious question arises of how to pay for travel expenses.
