The Moore Method: for Undergraduates?

In my daily morning walks, I’ve managed to read R. L. Moore’s biography (R. L.Moore: Mathematician and Teacher by John Parker (MAA)), where I learn about his famous method of instruction: he would give some axioms to his students and assigned them theorems to prove. The students are not allowed to communicate to each other, nor are they allowed to consult any book; they must sweat on the problem until they get something that they can call a solution that they are expected to present in class, where the penalty of not getting the right answer is to listen to another student who has gotten it right. It seems he used this method mostly with his graduate students (I don’t think I’ve read that he used it with his undergraduates although he was known to have a special flair to recruit undergraduates who would become great mathematicians); nevertheless, I think this method could be implemented in undergraduate math classes because it emphasizes problem solving and hard work that, I think, many undergraduates need.

Cheating, Learning Quizzes, and What I learned at the DMV

I recently moved to a new state, which meant that I needed a new driver’s license. I expected to have to sign some paperwork, but I was surprised to have to take a computerized quiz. Although the quiz was trivial to pass, I did manage to learn something about specific driving laws in the area. Inspired by the experience, I decided to use a similar “learning quiz” to deal with some of the issues of cheating that have come up in my past courses.

How the iPad Has Made My Mathematical Life Easier

One of the tools that I have found useful academically in the last year has been the iPad. Although, in the traditional advertisements for the iPad, the ability to play music, watch videos or use various cool applications features heavily, I believe that for the mathematics graduate student the definitive usage would have to be the ability to read PDFs. (I use an application called GoodReader). Combined with access to papers online, not only does this save a lot of trees, it saves you time and it gives you the ability to do things that you could not do otherwise, for instance carry around your entire library of research papers with you. Therefore, you can read papers at anytime and anywhere, which I often do.

The Bore Method, or Challenging Students

The other morning I took a break to make my news-browsing rounds and came across an interesting story on Longreads.com. (Warning: only visit that site if you have time to spare!) The article is an engrossing account of scientific discorvey; a few years ago a doctor performed a stem-cell transplant to cure Lukemia in a man suffering from AIDS. Dr. Gero Hütter had the unique idea to use a donor with a naturally-occurring mutation which provides a level of protection against HIV. Timothy Brown now has no trace of the virus in his body. I found most interesting a quote from the doctor describing his literatue search:

“My first thought was, I’m wrong. There must be something I was missing.”
