I recently found out about a book called The Witch of Agnesi. For some reason, I felt some doubt that the title was actually mathematics related. However, when I did look it up, it seems to be a fiction book about a math teacher named Bonnie investigating the deaths of students competing in a high school competition including one who is unusually precocious at math.

I recently learned of a great online resource for helping me with LaTex syntax. The website is called Detexify. The main attraction is that it is so easy to use; you don’t need to sift through hundreds of pages of a manual to find your symbol. All you need to do is draw the symbol you’re interested in and the program lists some likely candidates for the syntax on the right hand side. I still use other references to figure out how to put accent marks on text characters and for formatting issues, but this is a great tool for learning how to tex math symbols.

My mom recently made a sock monkey for me. I was just so excited that I set out on a search to find math related to sock monkeys. Of course, on my way, I got distracted. You know how mathematicians love tangential thoughts. I somehow ended up finding a link for the Manchester Orchestra. They have a new album coming out on May 10 called Simple Math. I have not really thought about the lyrics of the song, but I have watched one of the videos (that includes the lyrics) and am quite intrigued by it. I really enjoy the different designs throughout the video. They really did a nice job with creating it.

Graduate students are constantly advised to attend conferences. If you do a quick search on this blog, you will find some encouraging articles describing the benefits of going to a conference.
