How to Solve it (Part I)

I plan to discuss, summarize, or comment several sections of G. Polya’s How to Solve it: A New Aspect of Mathematical Method; I may do all of the above in one article because it seems to me that one tends to involve the others. I will start with pages 1 to 5 in this article and continue in subsequent articles. In Continue reading

My Experience Applying to Graduate Programs

As a high school student, applying to universities seemed nowhere near as daunting as the prospect of applying to graduate programs in mathematics. My naïve thought process was how different could applying to graduate programs possibly be, right? In my experience, it has been very different. Mathematical Card Game

At the Joint Meetings, I have been able to meet many interesting people, including freelance author, Dana Mackenzie. If you look at his webpage, you can see that he has written lots of math related articles and books. One particularly interesting thing he has worked on is a mathematical card game called the Stern-Mackenzie One Round War. The rules of the game and a simulation of it can be found at http://wordplay.blogs.nytimes.com/category/Numberplay/

On Tuesday, Mackenzie will be posting an explanation of strategies to use to win the game. Check it out and post comments below of strategies you come up with.
