Taking Your Show On The Road

For many readers, enjoying summer and time off involves some amount of travel. If you take a traditional vacation, this post is not for you. However, the longer you stay away from your home routine the more likely it is you need to accomplish work tasks while on the road. I spent the previous two weeks in Pennsylvania, the first week with little more planned than visiting people and a canoe trip. I managed to keep up the studying momentum; tips follow.

Math Environment

In my department recently, there has been some discussion about what modifications we could make to our building to enhance the quality of the department.  The conversation has centered around not only cosmetic improvements, but also features that would draw people out of their offices to an environment conducive to collaboration.  Some people have proposed some very interesting ideas.

NY Times Education News Devotes Issue to Graduate School

The education section of the NY Times has recently published a special grad school issue.

More Americans than ever are going to grad school, thanks to stubbornly high unemployment. And so this issue is devoted to all those acronyms beyond the B.A. But while much of today’s focus is job preparation, we like what Anna Saikin, a Ph.D. student and blogger at Rice, sees in the experience — “the chance to discuss esoteric topics with like-minded people, to no discernible end other than the pursuit of knowledge.”

Unfortunately, the Times has implemented a pay-wall, but you should check out the articles if at all possible. They cover admissions, the return on investment of graduate school, teaching and a mini interview with Jorge Cham.

Math Class Discussion Style

I am applying for an assistantship and to be eligible, I have to be observed by a professor. Due to conflicts in schedule, I could not teach for one of the College Algebra courses. Instead, I was asked to teach for a course called “NUMBER SYS/THEORY FOR TEACHERS.” It is a math class for elementary education teachers.
