Invitation to the 17th Annual R.L. Moore Legacy Conference on Inquiry-Based Learning

The Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF) is pleased to announce the 2014 R.L. Moore Legacy Conference June 19-21 in Denver, Colorado. The Legacy of R.L. Moore Project, established by the Educational Advancement Foundation, helps advance studies of the mathematician Robert Lee Moore (1882-1974), thereby promoting the study of more effective methods of learning and teaching at all educational levels and in all subjects. Every student has the capability for creative and critical thinking and the method pioneered by Moore has proven to be very conducive to recognizing, nurturing, and developing this ability.

This year’s conference will be accessible to both new users of inquiry-based learning (IBL) and experienced users. Our theme “Engaging with Inquiry-Based Learning” promises to involve the audience so that everyone can leave with new ideas for their classrooms. As a result, this year’s conference is particularly appropriate for graduate students. The MAA and the EAF graciously subsidize this conference (including food and hotel costs); if the remaining cost is still prohibitive, it is possible to ask the Academy of Inquiry-Based Learning for support.

We encourage you all to attend and even submit an abstract if you have IBL experience. See the “Call for Papers” below. Please let us know if you have any questions. Share this post with others who may be interested as well!

Call for Papers

The theme is intended to encourage abstracts and proposals which focus on ACTIVE participation of attendees during the parallel sessions.

We are interested in sessions about any aspect of IBL, but especially encourage submissions to the following special sessions:

  • My Favorite IBL Activity: Share your favorite IBL activity or group of activities with the participants.
  • IBL Outreach: Share how you use IBL in outreach activities such as Math Teachers’ Circles, Math Student Circles, math clubs, and math camps.
  • IBL Professional Development: Share how you educate others in the preK-16 educational community about IBL.
  • Nuts & Bolts: Share your most successful (or not so successful) approaches to engaging students, grading, assessment, and marketing in an IBL classroom.
  • General IBL: Share other engaging IBL topics that do not fit into an above session.

Sessions will be a bit longer than in the past to account for the focus on active participation. Specifically, sessions will be 30 minutes in duration (25 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes reserved for questions).

To submit a proposal for a talk or workshop session, send the following information to
