Last but not least, I&#8217;m <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puerto_Ricans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boricua<\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Among my recent non-research projects, I served as Associate Editor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.org\/notices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Notices of the AMS<\/a> from 2016-2018, co-founded <a href=\"http:\/\/lathisms.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lathisms<\/a> (Latinxs and Hispanics in the Mathematical Sciences), co-founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/diazlopezalexander\/dreams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Villanova DREAMS program<\/a>, and served as part of the Math Task Force for <a href=\"https:\/\/sacnas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SACNAS<\/a> (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, back to this blog. My plan is to write 6-8 blog posts, most of them on professional development topics but some about my personal experiences. The topics include creating a motivational (math) syllabus, first day of class activities, AMS-MAA-SIAM periodicals, open-source books, grant opportunities, and self-help. So, stay tuned and subscribe to this blog on the right column &#8212;&gt;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While I work on all that stuff, here are some other cool resources for new faculty that have benefited me one way or another:<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/programs\/travel-grants\/AMS-SimonsTG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AMS Simons Travel Gran<\/a>t &#8211; $4,000 travel funds for two years<\/span> (you must have completed your PhD within the last four years to be eligible)<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mathscinet.ams.org\/mathscinet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MathSciNet<\/a> &#8211; a super cool feature I like and use a lot is that you can see which papers have cited a paper you are interested in.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maa.org\/programs-and-communities\/professional-development\/project-next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MAA Project NExT<\/a> &#8211; professional development program that addresses all aspect of an academic career. It&#8217;s designed for new or recent PhD&#8217;s. I can&#8217;t say enough great things about Project NExT.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/reuf.aimath.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">REUF<\/span><\/a> &#8211; An REU for faculty? Yes! Supported by the NSF, <a href=\"https:\/\/aimath.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AIM<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/icerm.brown.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ICERM<\/a> organize this weeklong program for faculty interested in mentoring undergraduates. The program is designed to introduce faculty to research areas\/problems that are accessible for undergraduates. I did the IAS program and it was a blast! I worked with the amazing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.math.hmc.edu\/~omar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mohamed Omar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pamelaeharris.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pamela Harris<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/erikinskosite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Erik Insko<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To finish this post,\u00a0 I would like to share a series of interviews we ran in Notices of the AMS with mathematicians from Industry and Academia.
