It was so beautiful that I did not even think to break out my book.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/phdplus\/2016\/11\/30\/join-my-ga-math-book-club\/\">GA Math Book Club<\/a> Continues<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My spring and summer reading has been dominated by Swedish noir and giant historical novels, most recently the incredible <em>A Place of Greater Safety<\/em> by Hilary Mantel. The French Revolution\u2014Aaaaaaaaaaah! So brutal! \u00a0However, I needed enough breaks from the guillotine to make it through two very worthwhile mathy volumes in the last few months: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/weaponsofmathdestructionbook.com\/\">Weapons of Math Destruction<\/a><\/em>, by Cathy O\u2019Neil, and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.siobhanroberts.com\/genius-at-play\/\">Genius at Play: The Curious Mind of John Horton Conway<\/a><\/em>, by Siobhan Roberts.\u00a0 Neither of these books were what I expected, but I was pleased with both in their own ways.<\/p>\n<p><em>Weapons of Math Destruction<\/em>\u00a0came out last year, and has been on my reading list since Evelyn Lamb <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/roots-of-unity\/review-weapons-of-math-destruction\/\">reviewed it<\/a> in the Scientific American blog. It hits some of my usually disconnected strong interests: interesting and unusual career paths in mathematics, the intersections of mathematics and social justice, and the ways in which acting with good or neutral intentions can lead to negative unforeseen and sometimes devastating consequences (I know, this is a weird interest, but where would all those depressing novels and plays be without this principle?). Cathy O\u2019Neil has followed an unusual and interesting path, from academic life to Wall Street, data mining, and now <a href=\"https:\/\/mathbabe.org\/2016\/07\/22\/auditing-algorithms\/\">her own company auditing algorithms<\/a>. I enjoy reading O\u2019Neil\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/mathbabe.org\/\">mathbabe blog<\/a>.\u00a0 <em>Weapons of Math Destruction<\/em>\u00a0was an important book for me to read, because my usual vision of mathematics and social justice involves the ways that mathematical tools can be used to fight for fairness or justice (for example, to <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.tufts.edu\/gerrymandr\/\">identify gerrymandered congressional districts<\/a>).\u00a0 However, O\u2019Neil describes how the algorithms we design for efficiency and optimization, and even fairness, can treat people very unfairly and lead to systemic injustice.\u00a0 She does this well, though without any real technical discussion. This book is truly accessible to a general audience. This spring, I gave it to some of my students who were taking summer jobs in finance or considering careers in industry.\u00a0 This was not at all to discourage them from working in these areas, but to provide some context and some case studies. I want my students to love their careers, and I know that many of them have a strong sense of responsibility to the larger world.\u00a0 <em>Weapons of Math Destruction<\/em>\u00a0is, among other things, a manual for those who feel this sense of responsibility, of things we should not overlook or sweep aside as we try to build the better, faster, more efficient algorithm for everything.<\/p>\n<p><em>Genius at Play<\/em> also interests me as the story of an unusual mathematical life. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Horton_Conway\">John Horton Conway<\/a> has, in some ways, followed a very narrow path in math: from early\u00a0talent to Cambridge student, then Cambridge professor, and then on to Princeton.\u00a0 However, his remarkable approach to mathematics and life, as well as his totally wacky charisma\u2014captured in his own words whenever possible\u2014make this a very different mathematical biography.\u00a0 Siobhan Roberts does us the service of allowing us to meet Conway through their relationship as biographer (or \u201camanuensis\u201d, as Conway sometimes refers to her) and subject.\u00a0 I found the conversational and non-linear narrative style of <em>Genius at Play<\/em> uncomfortable at points, but I really liked it in the end. One reason I read this book was to get a bit of context on the history of cellular automata; I came away with much more than I bargained for.\u00a0 I also learned that, if I ever get the chance to meet Conway, I should probably\u00a0not ask him about the <a href=\"https:\/\/bitstorm.org\/gameoflife\/\">Game of Life<\/a>.\u00a0 Roberts walks a careful\u00a0line to respect Conway\u2019s privacy, but hints at some of his personal adventures. \u00a0This has the possibly\u00a0unintentional consequence of making the reader, used to tell-all type biographies, even more curious about what is left out. On the other hand, a significant amount of math is kept in the book, and Roberts\/Conway do a remarkably deft job of explaining big picture topics and even elucidating full proofs, while never seeming to oversimplify or condescend to the reader.\u00a0This book gave me a new sense of\u00a0the explosion of mathematical creativity\u00a0brought on by the rise of computers, and the sense that I had\u00a0experienced the extraordinary personality of John Conway first hand.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>I hope that I can read a book about Richard Guy someday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week I am blogging about books from a conference in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birs.ca\/events\/2017\/5-day-workshops\/17w5045\">Diophantine Approximation and Algebraic Curves<\/a> at the Banff international Research Station (BIRS).\u00a0 This has been a great conference in several ways\u2014seeing some of awesome math friends, meeting new people, very good talks, the chance to play exceedingly non-serious but very fun bridge.\u00a0 I had a really valuable math discussion in which someone explained a difficult idea to me in an intuitive way (thanks, Benjamin Maschke!).\u00a0 All this, plus BIRS is in a stunning natural setting in Banff National Park (in the Canadian Rockies). Credit: Banff International Research Station.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Number theorist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_K._Guy\">Richard Guy<\/a> really deserves his own book.\u00a0 He did just get his own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maa.org\/news\/happy-birthday-richard-guy\">100<sup>th<\/sup> birthday conference<\/a>, but that\u2019s not going far enough.\u00a0 Richard Guy collaborated extensively with Conway, and was mentioned many times in the GaP; however, there is so much more to his life and career than this collaboration. A few highlights: Guy was born in 1916 in England. \u00a0He excelled in mathematics, obtaining BA and MA degrees at Cambridge, then got a teaching certification from the University of Birmingham and became a mathematics teacher. He worked as a teacher in England for several years, though he was sent to Iceland and then Bermuda with the meteorological branch of the Royal Air Force for a period during World War II.\u00a0 In the 1950s, Guy moved to Singapore and then to India, teaching at the University of Malaya and the Indian Institute of Technology. In 1960, Guy met Paul Erd\u00f6s in Singapore.\u00a0 Erd\u00f6s encouraged Guy to pursue his interests in mathematics more seriously, and they began a mathematical collaboration that led to four joint papers.\u00a0 Guy and his family moved to Calgary, Alberta, in 1965, where he joined the mathematics department at the University of Calgary and is still an active emeritus Professor.\u00a0 He has written many books, including the classic <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.springer.com\/us\/book\/9780387208602#reviews\">Unsolved Problems in Number Theory<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 He is also a very accomplished mountaineer, and\u2026 well, I could go on for a long time. I am a great admirer, of both his mathematics and adventurous spirit.\u00a0 Sometimes it seemed that Richard Guy was essentially the star of the conference\u2014the lecture room was full for his talk on the final afternoon, and all week people shared stories about their experiences with him and spoke with reverence about how he still proves theorems and walks up tall mountains.\u00a0 Just before his talk, Jennifer Park said, \u201cI hope I still love math as much as he does when I\u2019m 100.\u201d Agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u00a0afternoon I found him in the lounge chatting with <a href=\"https:\/\/asu.pure.elsevier.com\/en\/persons\/andrew-bremner\">Andrew Bremner<\/a> about Wimbledon, so I took this opportunity to introduce myself.\u00a0 I asked Richard about mathematical life and I really loved his response.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me:<\/strong> \u201cWhat would you say to early career mathematicians about how to have a great life in math?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Richard Guy:<\/strong> \u201cMath is fun, and it is difficult, but you have to find your own level.\u00a0 When you\u2019re a small child, you learn to count and add and subtract and such.\u00a0 There are lots of whiz kids at arithmetic, who then just kind of fold up when algebra, with all the x\u2019s and such, comes along.\u00a0 And it happens again with trigonometry, calculus and so on.\u00a0 When you hit more and more abstraction as you go along, it\u2019s easy to feel you\u2019ve got beyond your depth.\u00a0 But you can find your own level of abstraction and work there, because there are plenty of things to work on at each level.\u00a0 The thing is not to get depressed when you don\u2019t understand\u2014and I mean sometimes I hardly understand\u2014what people at conferences are talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2042\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.ams.org\/phdplus\/files\/2017\/07\/GuyMeBremner.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2042\" class=\"wp-image-2042 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.ams.org\/phdplus\/files\/2017\/07\/GuyMeBremner.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.ams.org\/phdplus\/files\/2017\/07\/GuyMeBremner.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.ams.org\/phdplus\/files\/2017\/07\/GuyMeBremner.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.ams.org\/phdplus\/files\/2017\/07\/GuyMeBremner.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.ams.org\/phdplus\/files\/2017\/07\/GuyMeBremner.jpg?w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.ams.org\/phdplus\/files\/2017\/07\/GuyMeBremner.jpg?w=1920 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Guy, me, and Andrew Bremner.
