{"id":472,"date":"2009-11-01T17:51:19","date_gmt":"2009-11-01T21:51:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mathgradblog.williams.edu\/?p=472"},"modified":"2009-11-01T17:51:19","modified_gmt":"2009-11-01T21:51:19","slug":"mentoring-advice-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/mathgradblog\/2009\/11\/01\/mentoring-advice-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Mentoring Advice Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"mailto:aboocher@gmail.com\">Adam Boocher<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Dan mentioned in his post a few weeks ago, we&#8217;ve just revamped our mentoring program at Berkeley. \u00a0 I think Dan gave some excellent tips on the academic side of things, and so I thought I&#8217;d write some advice from a different angle. \u00a0I&#8217;m finding more and more that grad school isn&#8217;t all about the research and the math. \u00a0To give an example, the math department ran a workshop a few weeks ago that I&#8217;ll call &#8220;A friendly visit from the university psychologist.&#8221; \u00a0The discussion basically centered around the stress involved in being a graduate student and ways of managing it. \u00a0It was really useful to have a candid discussion about this side of the graduate school experience, and we got some useful tips, which I&#8217;ll share below as well as some of the things I&#8217;ve found helpful.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>My basic advice for entering grad students would be to find a balance and minimize stress. \u00a0Easier said than done, right?
