\u00a0In the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/mathgradblog\/2015\/12\/30\/documenting-academic-job-search-part-iii\/\" target=\"_blank\">most recent blog post<\/a>, Derek gave advice on how to navigate the JMM when you are on the job market\u00a0and\/or presenting your own research. \u00a0Here in this\u00a0complementary post, you&#8217;ll find advice &amp; resources for earlier-stage\u00a0graduate students or first-time JMM attendees.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->First, some <strong>useful links<\/strong> to get you ready to make the most of your JMM experience:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JointMath\" target=\"_blank\">@JointMath<\/a> The official Twitter handle for all things JMM<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/JMM16?src=hash\">#JMM16 hashtag<\/a> for anyone to share their favorite JMM moments<\/li>\n<li>2016 JMM Mobile App: free app that compiles the most useful logistics info.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/jointmathematicsmeetings.org\/meetings\/national\/jmm2016\/2181_app\" target=\"_blank\">See here<\/a>\u00a0for more information, or if you are on your mobile device, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripbuildermedia.com\/apps\/jmm2016\" target=\"_blank\">click here directly<\/a>\u00a0to download the app<\/li>\n<li>JointMeetingNews daily email updates and schedules will appear in your inbox if you\u2019ve registered for the meeting, or you can find them <a href=\"http:\/\/jointmathematicsmeetings.org\/meetings\/national\/jmm\/jmmNewsletter\" target=\"_blank\">online here<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The official<a href=\"http:\/\/jointmathematicsmeetings.org\/meetings\/national\/jmm2016\/2181_newcomers\" target=\"_blank\"> JMM Newcomer\u2019s Guide<\/a>\u00a0with the basic info and advice for the conference<\/li>\n<li>A piece I wrote for the Notices of the AMS about my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/notices\/201301\/rnoti-p87.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">experiences as a first-time JMM conference attendee<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And some<strong> perennial JMM favorites<\/strong> to add to your schedule regardless of your area of interest:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>AMS Colloquium<\/strong> talks (first talk is 1pm Wednesday): even if the talks are outside your main area of interest, attend the first and most accessible lecture in the series.\u00a0 It\u2019s an unusual experience to listen to a math lecture amongst an audience\u00a0of one thousand!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Graduate Student\/First-Timer\u2019s reception<\/strong> (5:30pm-6:30pm Wednesday): <em>highly <\/em>recommended reception with delicious appetizers; it&#8217;s a great place for mixing and mingling after your first conference day and meeting other attendees and hearing about neat sessions, exhibits, talks, or events you might not have noticed on the extensive JMM program<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gibbs Lecture<\/strong> (8:30pm-9:30pm Wednesday): you will have time to grab dinner with your new friends (from the above reception) before snagging\u00a0a good seat for this accessible lecture<\/li>\n<li><strong>Who wants to be a mathematician<\/strong> (Thursday morning): a national <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/programs\/students\/wwtbam\/wwtbam\" target=\"_blank\">game-show style contest of the AMS<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Joint Prize Session<\/strong> (4:25pm Thursday): hear about the award-winning works of mathematicians from across\u00a0the country as prestigious prizes are handed out to <a href=\"http:\/\/jointmathematicsmeetings.org\/meetings\/national\/jmm2016\/2181_prizes\" target=\"_blank\">this year&#8217;s prize recipients<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mathematically Bent Theater<\/strong> (6pm Friday): original math-themed theater performances are always an entertaining evening event; see a brief taste of what they do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oS5KewfV7wU\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Exhibit hall<\/strong>: set aside at least half an hour to browse the booksellers, math art displays, software demos, and freebie giveaways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And I&#8217;ll leave you with a piece of personal advice:<strong> Get off the Internet and embrace awkward encounters.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to maximize your chances of having interesting and productive encounters at the JMM, try to\u00a0leave your comfort zone and interact with lots of new people.\u00a0 If you let yourself always seek to minimize the awkwardness that you feel, you\u2019ll probably end up spending a large portion\u00a0of the JMM\u00a0break time seated at one of the round tables and browsing the Internet. \u00a0But you can browse the Internet any day!
