{"id":22160,"date":"2013-02-06T04:18:11","date_gmt":"2013-02-06T08:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mathgradblog.williams.edu\/?p=22160"},"modified":"2014-07-23T14:05:23","modified_gmt":"2014-07-23T19:05:23","slug":"semester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/mathgradblog\/2013\/02\/06\/semester\/","title":{"rendered":"New Semester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since my last post before the JMM in January, I&#8217;ve begun a new semester.\u00a0 My goals are ambitious, as I am taking two course, finding an advisor for my Master&#8217;s thesis, and starting a new blog.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/mathgradblog\/files\/2013\/02\/index.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-22736\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/mathgradblog\/files\/2013\/02\/index.jpg\" alt=\"Addition on an Elliptic Curve\" width=\"193\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a>In some ways my new courses seem old.\u00a0 I am taking algebraic geometry and algebra.\u00a0\u00a0 Two of the main topics of these courses &#8211; rings and algebraic (especially elliptic) curves &#8211; were introduced to me in a previous algebraic number theory course.\u00a0 I am looking forward to cementing my understanding of these topics and learn some new concepts.\u00a0 I think I am on the road to becoming an algebraist.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>My search for an advisor has begun with a professor who taught my undergraduate algebra course, my algebraic number theory course, and who is teaching my current algebra course.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve also reached out to two professors on the analysis side.\u00a0 What I know about analytical number theory interests me, but I don&#8217;t know if there are any open problems in this area that are accessible to me or that are appropriate for a Master&#8217;s thesis.\u00a0 Most professors with whom I&#8217;ve interacted have several thesis topics at the ready for their students.\u00a0 In contrast with the above, I have often heard that graduate students need to choose their own topic.\u00a0 However, at this stage of my life in mathematics I am comfortable with adopting a research topic and personalizing it as I progress toward a thesis.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I have started a new blog with mathematical content.\u00a0 I got this idea from another blogger, Matt Might, and one of his several <a title=\"Success in Grad School\" href=\"http:\/\/matt.might.net\/articles\/successful-phd-students\/\">posts<\/a> about success in graduate school.\u00a0 Since I haven&#8217;t begun my research yet, my first posts have been and will be based on what I have learned in my courses and independent reading.\u00a0 For example, my first post was on the finiteness of the ideal class group.\u00a0 My second post, based on a proof of the transcendence of <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=e&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"e\" class=\"latex\" \/>, was on sequences of rational numbers that converge to powers of <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=e&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"e\" class=\"latex\" \/>.<\/p>\n<p>I plan to make the most of these new opportunities.\u00a0 Thus my goals for the semester are: Ace my two courses, find an advisor and research topic, and make <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=n&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000&#038;s=0&#038;c=20201002\" alt=\"n\" class=\"latex\" \/> posts to my new blog.\u00a0 What are your goals for the new semester?<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since my last post before the JMM in January, I&#8217;ve begun a new semester.\u00a0 My goals are ambitious, as I am taking two course, finding an advisor for my Master&#8217;s thesis, and starting a new blog.
