Here is what he had to say.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What is your favorite part of teaching?<br \/>\nThe direct relationships I enjoy with my students.\u00a0 Our classes [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.belmont.edu\/mcs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Belmont University<\/a>] are small enough (typically in the 20-30 range) that I get to know virtually all of my students and a bit more about them than just what meets the eye.<\/li>\n<li>What is (are) your current top research interest(s)?<br \/>\nMost of my research interests are related to the scholarship of teaching, including ideas for incorporating &#8220;mathematical characters&#8221; into the courses that I teach.\u00a0 Because of our heavy teaching load (12 hours a semester), that&#8217;s the most realistic research pursuit for me.\u00a0 Also, I manage our campus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.belmont.edu\/mcs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mathematical Problem Solving competition<\/a> &#8211; this often requires me to generate good problems that will be of general interest.\u00a0 The problems I create are generally from the discrete math realm.<\/li>\n<li>What professional organizations are you a member of?<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/maa.org\" target=\"_blank\">MAA<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.podnetwork.org\" target=\"_blank\">POD (Professional and Organizational Development)<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtmt.org\" target=\"_blank\">Middle Tennessee Mathematics Teachers<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tmta.info\" target=\"_blank\">Tennessee Mathematics Teachers Association<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aacu.org\" target=\"_blank\">AAC&amp;U<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Do you have any interesting facts about yourself you&#8217;d like to share?<br \/>\nI was a\u00a0first generation college student, having grown up on a family-run dairy farm in Arkansas.\u00a0\u00a0My wife, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.belmont.edu\/english\/faculty\/pinter_robbie.html\" target=\"_blank\">Robbie Pinter<\/a>, has been an English Professor at Belmont since\u00a01986.\u00a0 Our only child is 19; he\u00a0is on the autism spectrum, which has taught me a great deal about learning very\u00a0broadly.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll begin serving as the Director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.belmont.edu\/tcenter\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Belmont University&#8217;s Teaching Center<\/a> in January 2013; in this role, I&#8217;ll work with faculty from across campus on their continuing professional development as teachers, and especially with new faculty as they enter Belmont.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Thanks to Dr. Pinter for taking time to respond to these questions!<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did a short interview with Dr. Mike Pinter, 2012 US Professor of the Year for the state of Tennessee.
