{"id":1116,"date":"2010-11-17T12:47:53","date_gmt":"2010-11-17T16:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mathgradblog.williams.edu\/?p=1116"},"modified":"2010-11-17T12:47:53","modified_gmt":"2010-11-17T16:47:53","slug":"things-i-wish-i-new-before-grad-school-discussion-starter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/mathgradblog\/2010\/11\/17\/things-i-wish-i-new-before-grad-school-discussion-starter\/","title":{"rendered":"Things I Wish I Knew Before Grad School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"mailto:aohendri@ncsu.edu\">Angelean Hendrix<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Every day I sit in class and find out something else it was assumed I knew before starting graduate school. \u00a0As many come from different undergraduate institutions, and therefore backgrounds, I thought it would be interesting,\u00a0beneficial, and a little entertaining to start a discussion on the things wish should have known but didn&#8217;t when entering grad school.\u00a0I&#8217;ll start&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>It took me almost a whole semester to realize that a &#8220;singularity&#8221; meant a place where you divided by zero. \ud83d\ude1b\u00a0And for further\u00a0embarrassment&#8230;..\u00a0Gaussian\u00a0elimination = elementary row operations and plug and solve&#8230;\u00a0really that&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ll stumble upon something new tomorrow (and yes, I already passed my quals).
