{"id":1992,"date":"2018-04-02T08:00:49","date_gmt":"2018-04-02T12:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/matheducation\/?p=1992"},"modified":"2018-04-02T08:45:23","modified_gmt":"2018-04-02T12:45:23","slug":"eating-our-own-cooking-what-ive-actually-used-or-shared","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/matheducation\/2018\/04\/02\/eating-our-own-cooking-what-ive-actually-used-or-shared\/","title":{"rendered":"Eating Our Own Cooking: What I\u2019ve Actually Used or Shared"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Art Duval, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/matheducation\/about-the-editors\/\"><em>Contributing Editor<\/em><\/a><em>, University of Texas at El Paso<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A popular saying in business (or so I\u2019ve read) is to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eating_your_own_dog_food#Criticism_and_alternative_terms\">eat your own cooking<\/a>\u201d: Use the products your own company makes.\u00a0 I suppose there are several motivations to do this: to demonstrate faith in your own work; to be your own quality control team; to make your product visible; etc.\u00a0 What does that have to do with teaching and learning mathematics?<\/p>\n<p>The best part about being on the editorial board for this blog continues to be the privilege of working with a talented group of editors and with all sorts of creative authors, who collectively have an incredible variety of important things to say.\u00a0 (F. Scott Fitzgerald: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/F._Scott_Fitzgerald#The_Crack-Up_(1936)\">You don&#8217;t write because you want to say something, you write because you have something to say.<\/a>\u201d)\u00a0 As a result, I sometimes feel like I am drowning in interesting ideas, with not nearly enough time to try them all.\u00a0\u00a0 Today I would like to tell you about the articles we\u2019ve published here that contain ideas I\u2019ve tried myself and\/or shared with students and colleagues.\u00a0 In other words, to answer the question \u201cWhat have I eaten of our own cooking?\u201d\u00a0 Bon app\u00e9tit!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2008\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2008\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2016\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.ams.org\/matheducation\/files\/2018\/04\/pie_clip_art-300x241.png?resize=300%2C241\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2008\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pie by <a href=\"http:\/\/sweetclipart.com\">sweetclipart.com<\/a><br \/> <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-sa\/3.0\/\">CC BY-NC-SA 3.0<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with ideas I explicitly share with students.\u00a0 Probably my biggest pet peeve with students is when they find the inverse of some function <em>y<\/em>=<em>f<\/em>(<em>x<\/em>) by first \u201cswapping the <em>x<\/em> and <em>y<\/em> variables\u201d.\u00a0 This is both mathematically and pedagogically unsound, as explained so completely by Frank Wilson, Scott Adamson, Trey Cox, and Alan O\u2019Bryan\u00a0in their article <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/matheducation\/2016\/11\/28\/inverse-functions-were-teaching-it-all-wrong\/\">Inverse Functions: We&#8217;re Teaching It All Wrong<\/a>.\u00a0 When my students make this mistake and, worse, see nothing wrong with it, I share this article with the whole class, and briefly summarize the ideas in class.<\/p>\n<p>I also frequently share with students an article I wrote, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/matheducation\/2015\/03\/10\/one-reason-fractions-and-many-other-topics-are-hard-equivalence-relations-up-and-down-the-mathematics-curriculum\/\">One Reason Fractions (and Many Other Topics) Are Hard: Equivalence Relations Up and Down the Mathematics Curriculum<\/a>.\u00a0 The more I look, the more I see equivalence relations throughout mathematics, causing hidden difficulties for students not just with fractions, but also with vectors, similar matrices, limits, and the difference between permutations and combinations.\u00a0 Beyond sharing this article with students, I keep in mind the difficulties caused when we need to work with equivalence classes as objects, so I can head off students\u2019 confusion before it sets in.<\/p>\n<p>Another article I use frequently for myself is <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/matheducation\/2015\/12\/20\/dont-count-them-out-helping-students-successfully-solve-combinatorial-tasks\/\">Don\u2019t Count Them Out \u2013 Helping Students Successfully Solve Combinatorial Tasks<\/a>, by Elise Lockwood.\u00a0 I regularly teach Discrete Mathematics, and I now follow her advice to have students \u201cfocus on sets of outcomes\u201d and not just the number of outcomes.\u00a0 I start each counting technique lesson by having students make a systematic list of all the outcomes.\u00a0 From the discussion that follows afterwards, some (not all) students understand and even sometimes figure out themselves the formulas that they will need to count such sets when they become too large to make an explicit list.<\/p>\n<p>The article, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/matheducation\/2015\/02\/10\/mathematics-professors-and-mathematics-majors-expectations-of-lectures-in-advanced-mathematics\/\">Mathematics Professors and Mathematics Majors\u2019 Expectations of Lectures in Advanced Mathematics<\/a>, by Keith Weber made a big impression on me when it came out, and I have shared this one as well with students in proof-based courses.\u00a0 I probably need to review this article again, because I see myself slipping back to old habits, such as not writing down enough details of proofs, that I worked hard to reverse when I first read it.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, I decided to give peer assessment a try, in an introduction to proofs course where I can\u2019t give nearly as much individual feedback as the students need.\u00a0 I started with Elise Lockwood\u2019s article <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/matheducation\/2015\/08\/10\/let-your-students-do-some-grading-using-peer-assessment-to-help-students-understand-key-concepts\/\">Let Your Students Do Some Grading?
