Image: public domain, via Wikimedia commons.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dick Lipton is a computer science professor at Georgia Tech <a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2011\/06\/24\/polls-and-predictions-and-pnp\/\">who thinks P=NP<\/a>, and Ken Regan is a computer science professor at the University of Buffalo who thinks P\u2260NP. Together, they are \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/11\/introducing-pip\/\">Pip<\/a>,\u201d a Dick-Kens character.<\/p>\n<p>Today I want to tell you about their blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/\">G\u00f6del\u2019s Lost Letter and P=NP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lipton and Regan write mainly about computer science, mathematics, and the history of those subjects, but they always put people first. Most posts start with a brief bio sketch of the person or people whose research they discuss, followed by a little background on the question they\u2019re writing about and the technical content. In the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/about\/\">About<\/a>\u201d page, Lipton writes, \u201cmy real reason for making \u201cwho\u201d central is to explain what researchers do when they work on hard open problems. They make mistakes, they go down dead-ends, they make progress. Also students may not know, but even experts sometimes forget, that ideas that we now see as easy were once unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The blog\u2019s archives are extensive, and I\u2019ve fallen down quite a few rabbit holes browsing through them. Rather than try to give any kind of a comprehensive overview,\u00a0here&#8217;s an assorted (I dare not say &#8220;random&#8221;) collection of posts you might enjoy if you like creative, personal writing about some pretty technical topics.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m writing about this blog now because of how much I\u2019ve enjoyed several of the most recent posts:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2014\/05\/27\/avoiding-monsters-and-non-monsters\/\">Avoiding Monsters and Non-Monsters<\/a>, on Weierstrass\u2019s \u201cmonsters\u201d (continuous, non-differentiable functions) and some of their monstrous and non-monstrous friends<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/01\/how-to-avoid-leaving-clues\/\">How to Avoid Leaving Clues<\/a>, on how to have your memory and use it too<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/06\/is-this-a-proof-2\/\">Is This a Proof<\/a>? On the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/roots-of-unity\/2013\/05\/15\/goldbach-variations\/\">Weak Goldbach Conjecture<\/a> and computer-aided proofs.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/11\/proof-envy\/\">Proof Envy,<\/a> on the theorems they wish they could use. \u201cCall the phenomenon theorem envy: There are theorems that I have long known, but have never been able to use in any actual paper, in any proof of my own. I find this curiously unsatisfying, to know a cool result and yet be unable to use it in one of my papers.\u201d<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/18\/the-problem-of-catching-chess-cheaters\/\">The Problem of Catching Chess Cheaters<\/a>, on Regan\u2019s recent work on the topic. Another good post on chess cheating is the <a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2013\/01\/13\/the-crown-game-affair\/\">Crown Game Affair<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2014\/04\/19\/in-praise-of-pnp-proofs\/\">In Praise of P=NP Proofs<\/a>, on why reading\u00a0P=NP proofs is a good idea, even if (so far) they&#8217;re all wrong.<br \/>\nI also stumbled on an entertaining post from 2010 about how well mathematicians have done at <a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/19\/guessing-the-truth\/\">guessing whether conjectures are true<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lipton and Regan suggested a few other posts to me, including some that are more computer-focused:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/30\/perpetual-motion-of-the-21st-century\/\">Perpetual Motion of the 21st Century<\/a>, a double guest post from Gil Kalai, who does not think large-scale quantum computers are possible, and Aram Harrow, who does.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/26\/quantum-chocolate-boxes\/\">Quantum Chocolate Boxes<\/a>, on using linear extensions to figure out whether your chocolate box is full of pralines or not.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rjlipton.wordpress.com\/2010\/07\/25\/hedy-lamarr-the-inventor\/\">Hedy Lamarr the Inventor<\/a>, on amateurs in science and technology.
