Help gather the data!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over at the <a href=\"http:\/\/sbseminar.wordpress.com\/\">Secret Blogging Seminar<\/a> , Scott Morrison is championing a new project to analyze this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.ams.org\/blogonmathblogs\/files\/2014\/01\/open-access.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-514 alignleft\" alt=\"open-access\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.ams.org\/blogonmathblogs\/files\/2014\/01\/open-access.jpg?resize=300%2C235\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.ams.org\/blogonmathblogs\/files\/2014\/01\/open-access.jpg?resize=300%2C235&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.ams.org\/blogonmathblogs\/files\/2014\/01\/open-access.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>mathematics publications and draw attention to freely accessible papers.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/tqft.net\/mlp\/wiki\/The_Mathematics_Literature_Project\">The Mathematics Literature Project<\/a>\u00a0 is looking for your help in categorizing published articles according to whether they are freely accessible on arXiv, are freely accessible somewhere else, or are only accessible for a fee.\u00a0 After enough data are collected, one may be able to correlate accessibility and quality as measured by number of citations.\u00a0 There is a handy tutorial that will show you how to add information to the wiki by combing the internet for freely accessible versions of papers in well-known journals.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The color-coded progress bars displayed next to each Journal title on the wiki indicate how many articles have been categorized so far and how.\u00a0 To see the key to the color-coding, you need to click on the bar itself.<\/p>\n<p>In case you are interested in looking at some journals not listed on the wiki, the tables of contents of various journals are available through the site <a href=\"http:\/\/roddymacleod.wordpress.com\/2013\/12\/24\/135-more-open-access-and-subscription-journals-added-to-journaltocs\/\">JournalTOCs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, while reading Data Scientist Michale Li&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.foursquare.com\/2014\/01\/03\/the-mathematics-of-gamification\/\">The Mathematics of Gamification<\/a> post about how Foursquare uses Bayesian statistics to determine the quality of updates proposed by its users, I started thinking about how such a strategy might apply to peer review of academic papers in the future.\u00a0 Foursquare uses \u201choneypots\u201d to judge the quality of super-users\u2019 updates.\u00a0 Perhaps there could be certain academic papers that were \u201choney-pots\u201d (i.e. were peer-reviewed in a traditional way and determined to be of very high quality).\u00a0 These could help determine super-reviewers\u2019 ratings.\u00a0 Ratings could then also be informed in real-time by conditional probabilities.\u00a0 In other words, a user\u2019s rating could be informed by knowing the probability that a paper is \u201cgood\u201d given that the reviewer deemed it \u201cmediocre\u201d.\u00a0 What questions do YOU think that this data base might provoke or help answer?<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px;
