Photo courtesy of Vanessa Rivera Qui\u00f1ones<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Starting this month, Vanessa <span class=\"qu\" role=\"gridcell\"><span class=\"gD\" data-hovercard-id=\"vrivera9021@gmail.com\" data-hovercard-owner-id=\"128\">Rivera Qui\u00f1ones (<\/span><\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/missvriveraq?lang=en\">@MissVRiveraQ<\/a>) will be co-editing the blog with me! She received her Ph.D. in mathematics this year from the University of Illinois at Urbana\u2013Champaign and she&#8217;s currently looking for a job in Belgium. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Last year, Vanessa wrote three guest posts on the AMS Graduate Student Blog: <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/mathgradblog\/2018\/03\/16\/communicating-mathematics-broader-audience\/\">&#8220;Communicating Mathematics to a Broader Audience,&#8221;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/mathgradblog\/2018\/01\/14\/embracing-diverse-mathematical-communities\/\"> &#8220;Towards Embracing Diverse Mathematical Communities&#8221;<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/mathgradblog\/2016\/02\/24\/staying-organized-improve-productivity\/\">&#8220;Staying Organized to Improve Productivity.&#8221;<\/a> She is currently in the process of launching her own math blog.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa brings to this blog her broad interests in such areas as mathematical biology, data science, interdisciplinary research, science communication and teaching. She&#8217;s also passionate about exploring the intersection of those fields with equity, inclusion and social justice.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa says she views math blogging as &#8220;a nifty way to get ideas out there&#8221; and discuss &#8220;topics that don&#8217;t come up as naturally&#8221; within the mathematical community. She&#8217;s eager to jump into writing about a wide range of topics, including those outside of her areas of expertise and finds writing about different topics to be a great way to learn more about them.<\/p>\n<p>Her doctoral research, which involved collaborating with a biology laboratory, focused on using differential equations and other mathematical tools to<a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.math.illinois.edu\/~riveraq2\/research.html\"> study the disease dynamics of the <i> Daphnia-Metschnikowia<\/i> system<\/a>. She also participated in several other research programs. During a Research Experiences for Graduate Students (also at the University of Illinois at <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-1qd0xha r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Urbana\u2013Champaign) opportunity, she studied <a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.math.illinois.edu\/REGS\/reports13\/Rivera.pdf\">&#8220;Variable Annuities with Guaranteed Minimum Benefits.&#8221;<\/a> She also participated in the Research in Industrial Projects for Students program at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) where her group (sponsored by Standard and Poor&#8217;s) researched <a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.math.illinois.edu\/~riveraq2\/resources\/PresentationtoSponsors.pdf\">&#8216;Pricing and Risk in the Credit Markets: Investigation of Credit Default Swaps.&#8221;<\/a> <i> <\/i> <\/span>Her project at the Iowa Summer Institute in Biostatistics was the <a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.math.illinois.edu\/~riveraq2\/resources\/ISIB_Presentation-Vanessa-and-Gloriell.pdf\">&#8216;Study of Glaucoma Change Probability for Open-angle Glaucoma.&#8221; <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Vanessa was born in Puerto Rico and she went to college at the University of Puerto Rico at R\u00edo Piedras, where she earned a bachelor&#8217;s degree in pure mathematics with a minor in finance. She says that she didn&#8217;t have a lot of mathematical role models at the beginning of her undergraduate studies, but when she got involved with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacnas.org\/\">SACNAS <\/a>and other organizations aimed at underrepresented students, that really helped.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s critical to &#8220;look for stories that portray a lot of people that do math,&#8221; Vanessa says. She finds that while today&#8217;s students have access to certain websites (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/mathematicallygiftedandblack.com\/\">&#8220;Mathematically Gifted &amp; Black&#8221;<\/a>) and other resources that weren&#8217;t available when she started her undergrad, it&#8217;s still challenging for many of them to find role models. She says that meeting mentors with different backgrounds not often seen in mathematics can help students find the representation they crave. Some ways she thinks instructors can do this are by opening up with students about different aspects of their identities outside of mathematics and by encouraging students to connect with mathematicians of varied backgrounds at conferences.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few of Vanessa&#8217;s writing plans include creating blog tours similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/blogonmathblogs\/2019\/02\/21\/a-tour-of-dan-meyers-blog\/\">this one<\/a> and highlighting blogs covering interdisciplinary, collaborative research. She also says she &#8220;would love to see more blogs about books aimed at the general audience and explaining mathematical concepts in an accessible way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"qu\" role=\"gridcell\"><span class=\"gD\" data-hovercard-id=\"vrivera9021@gmail.com\" data-hovercard-owner-id=\"128\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif\">&#8220;I admire a lot the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.math3ma.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.math3ma.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1565904880047000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGf_6gU00t8ndC3ZwJd78cNzPgBeA\">Tai-Danae Bradley<\/a>, Nicky Case\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncase.me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/ncase.me\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1565904880047000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEDB1HvfGwyZYwHZtvNwt3SNqO8yg\">Explorables<\/a>, and MathMunch.
