And You Get Calculus! Everybody Gets Calculus!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of the beginning of the school year, which is coming in the next few weeks for many of us, I thought you might like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/opencalculus.wordpress.com\/\">opencalculus<\/a>. Matt Boelkins, a math professor at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, is working on a free, open-source calculus textbook. <a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.gvsu.edu\/boelkinm\/Home\/Download.html\">Active Calculus<\/a>, which he wrote with the help of his colleagues David Austin and Steven Schlicker, is available for download at Boelkins&#8217; website under a Creative Commons license. Last week, Boelkins announced that it had been <a href=\"http:\/\/opencalculus.wordpress.com\/2013\/08\/19\/active-calculus-now-endorsed-by-the-american-institute-of-mathematics\/\">endorsed by the American Institute of Mathematics<\/a>, which reviews and recommends free math resources.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_296\" style=\"width: 809px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:GabrielHorn.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-296\" class=\"size-full wp-image-296\" alt=\"Gabriel's Horn, which has infinite surface area and finite volume and is one of my favorite examples in calculus. The price is often &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/opencalculus.wordpress.com\/2013\/03\/23\/what-leads-to-the-high-prices-of-textbooks\/\">what the consumer will bear<\/a>,&#8221; and the student is stuck bearing outrageous prices because the alternative is to have no book at all. <a href=\"http:\/\/opencalculus.wordpress.com\/about\/\">Boelkins writes<\/a>, &#8220;it is my opinion that any student of calculus ought to have the opportunity to learn calculus from a text that is free of charge (if used in electronic format), and that instructors ought to have the same freedom, as opposed to being bound to books that cost more than <span>$<\/span>100 and sometimes even approach\u00a0$200.&#8221; In another post, he paraphrases Robert Ghrist as saying in a talk, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/opencalculus.wordpress.com\/2012\/08\/05\/the-limiting-resource-should-not-be-access-but-rather-time-and-talent-5-2\/\">the limiting resource should not be access, but rather time and talent<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Boelkins notes that there are other good <a href=\"http:\/\/opencalculus.wordpress.com\/2012\/08\/24\/existing-free-or-very-low-cost-calculus-texts\/\">free and low-cost calculus textbooks<\/a>, but his teaching approach and therefore his text emphasize active learning, and he only includes a few challenging examples in the text rather than lots of simple ones. (He advocates <a href=\"http:\/\/webwork.maa.org\/\">WeBWorK<\/a> as a good source for other examples and exercises.)<\/p>\n<p>It is probably too late to change your calculus textbook for this semester, but perhaps the opencalculus blog will inspire you for future semesters.\u00a0Boelkins is also a proponent of the free geometry program <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geogebra.org\/cms\/en\/\">Geogebra<\/a> and has some suggestions for <a href=\"http:\/\/opencalculus.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/02\/using-geogebra-in-calculus\/\">how to use it in calculus class<\/a>.\u00a0He will be using Active Calculus in his calculus class this semester and blogging about it as he goes along.
