{"id":1318,"date":"2015-07-23T11:45:47","date_gmt":"2015-07-23T16:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/blogonmathblogs\/?p=1318"},"modified":"2015-07-23T11:45:47","modified_gmt":"2015-07-23T16:45:47","slug":"pcmi-blog-roundup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/blogonmathblogs\/2015\/07\/23\/pcmi-blog-roundup\/","title":{"rendered":"PCMI Blog Roundup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to give a <a href=\"http:\/\/mathforum.org\/pcmi\/hstp\/sum2015\/afternoon\/lamb.html\">cross-program talk at PCMI<\/a>, the Park City Mathematics Institute.\u00a0I talked about how doing math online can help us reach others in the math community, building bridges between teachers, researchers, and recreational math enthusiasts and reach those who think math isn\u2019t for them. Image: Wendy Menard.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pcmi.ias.edu\/program-index\/2015\">PCMI is really several programs in one<\/a>. There is a research program with a graduate summer school, a secondary school teachers program, a program for faculty at undergraduate teaching-focused institutions, and an undergraduate summer school. (There might be more, but I think those are the groups I&#8217;ve encountered. It is large. It contains multitudes.) When I attended in the past, the instinct was for people to associate with others\u00a0in their group, but some gentle nudges towards cross-program socialization led to some interesting and fruitful conversations. I think it\u2019s easy to have tunnel vision as a participant in any of the programs, so those nudges really help people make connections and think about the broader math community they belong to. Incidentally, these are two of the things I find most gratifying about doing math online. Programs like PCMI are rare and short; the Internet, for better or worse, is always there. I&#8217;d never cross paths with\u00a0math teachers who live thousands of miles away\u00a0if I didn&#8217;t do it online.<\/p>\n<p>With all that online math talk, I thought it would be nice\u00a0to share some of the blogs\u00a0written by this year\u2019s PCMI participants. It turns out the teacher program is one step ahead of me: they keep a <a href=\"http:\/\/mathforum.org\/pcmi\/hstp\/blogs.html\">list of participants\u2019 blogs here<\/a>. So I\u2019ll just include a few blogs by the people I met either in person or online during my brief trip up into the mountains.<\/p>\n<p>I was happy to see that my AMS blogging pal Adriana Salerno, who writes <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/phdplus\/\">PhD Plus Epsilon<\/a>, was at PCMI this year. She was even kind enough to include my talk in her <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/phdplus\/2015\/07\/05\/pcmi-week-one\/#sthash.tJeuWp3E.dpbs\">week one roundup post<\/a>. While I didn\u2019t get to meet him, I also heard about <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/mathmentoringnetwork\/author\/dagankarp\/\">Dagan Karp, AMS blogger<\/a>, Harvey Mudd math professor, and leader of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pcmi.ias.edu\/program-ufp\/2015\">Undergraduate Faculty Program<\/a> at PCMI.<\/p>\n<p>I got to meet one of my online math pals, Ashli, known to me on Twitter as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mythagon\">@mythagon<\/a> and the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/mythagon.wordpress.com\/\">Learning to Fold<\/a>. I had lunch with her, Wendy Menard, who writes <a href=\"https:\/\/hermathness.wordpress.com\/\">Her Mathness<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/math8_teacher\">Dylan Kane<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/fivetwelvethirteen.wordpress.com\/\">Five Twelve Thirteen<\/a>. Both Menard and Kane blogged about the PCMI teacher program this year. Kane posted about\u00a0a short talk\u00a0he gave on the <a href=\"https:\/\/fivetwelvethirteen.wordpress.com\/2015\/07\/15\/mtbos-presentation-at-pcmi\/\">#MTBoS<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/mathtwitterblogosphere.weebly.com\/\">math twitter blog-o-sphere<\/a>), a cool online conglomeration of people blogging and tweeting about math and teaching. Later, I met <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/paomaths\">Anne Paoletti Bayna on Twitter<\/a>, where she shared her math Tumblr, <a href=\"http:\/\/paomaths.tumblr.com\/\">paomaths<\/a>. Menard and Bayna both blogged\/tumbl\u2019d about making conic sections with piles of salt. I\u2019ve never done that before, but there\u2019s a <a href=\"http:\/\/mathforum.org\/pcmi\/hstp\/resources\/sands\/UCTM_salt_article.pdf\">PCMI page about it<\/a> (pdf). I\u2019ll have to try it.<\/p>\n<p>I really wish I had been able to stay and talk more with other math bloggers at PCMI (and of course see <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/henryseg\">Henry Segerman&#8217;s<\/a> talk on 3D printed geometry the day after mine).
