{"id":120,"date":"2013-05-13T05:31:52","date_gmt":"2013-05-13T10:31:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/blogonmathblogs\/?p=120"},"modified":"2013-05-16T12:29:14","modified_gmt":"2013-05-16T17:29:14","slug":"building-the-world-digital-mathematical-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/blogonmathblogs\/2013\/05\/13\/building-the-world-digital-mathematical-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Building the World Digital Mathematical Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year over 60 new mathematical articles were appearing on <a title=\"Don't believe me?!\" href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/year\/math\/12\">arXiv<\/a>\u00a0every day! \u00a0What if every mathematics research article were freely available online?\u00a0 What format would you want this World Digital Mathematical Library (WDML) to take on other than a gigantic arXiv? \u00a0The debate concerning open access to academic research continues almost 7 years since the entire editorial board of Topology resigned and 16 months since the <a href=\"http:\/\/thecostofknowledge.com\">boycott of Elsevier<\/a> led by mathematician <a title=\"Gower's last update on the Elsevier boycott\" href=\"http:\/\/gowers.wordpress.com\/2013\/01\/28\/the-elsevier-boycott-one-year-on\/\">Tim Gowers<\/a> began.\u00a0 But <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ingrid_Daubechies\">Ingrid Daubechies<\/a>, the current president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mathunion.org\">International Mathematical Union<\/a> (IMU), wants to know what young mathematicians think about how articles already accessible online could be used.<\/p>\n<p>All kinds of questions have arisen: How should online articles be annotated by readers?\u00a0 How should errata be identified and discussed?\u00a0 Might there be a way for non-traditional contributions to research mathematics to be officially recognized within this context?\u00a0 How can it be made easier to update and create accurate bibliographies? \u00a0There are 29 comments and counting posted on <a href=\"http:\/\/terrytao.wordpress.com\">Terry Tao&#8217;s blog<\/a> concerning <a href=\"http:\/\/terrytao.wordpress.com\/2013\/05\/08\/planning-for-the-world-digital-mathematical-library\/\">Dr. Daubechies&#8217; guest post<\/a> on this topic last Wednesday.\u00a0 For example, graduate student <a href=\"http:\/\/math.cmu.edu\/~jrute\/\">Jason Rute<\/a> suggests online reading groups for specific papers and the ability to create reading lists as one does on Amazon. \u00a0The answers and ideas you might have may very well become a reality as the project is being backed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sloan.org\">Sloan Foundation<\/a>, which has also supported the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdss.org\">Sloan Digital Sky Survey<\/a>, a 14-year ongoing project that has greatly impacted astronomy research.<\/p>\n<p>Are you having deja vu?\u00a0 Parallel to the<a title=\"Science magazine's coverage of the event\" href=\"http:\/\/news.sciencemag.org\/sciencenow\/2004\/09\/07-02.html\">\u00a0the NIH making its research public <\/a>in\u00a02004, there was a push to retro-digitize hundreds of mathematics journals.\u00a0 So there is currently a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wdml.org\">website for the WDML<\/a> that is inactive but still has some interesting links.
