{"id":73,"date":"2015-04-28T20:49:51","date_gmt":"2015-04-29T01:49:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/?p=73"},"modified":"2018-07-30T07:59:34","modified_gmt":"2018-07-30T12:59:34","slug":"using-mathscinet-at-home-or-on-the-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/2015\/04\/28\/using-mathscinet-at-home-or-on-the-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Using MathSciNet at home or on the road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In talking with people who use MathSciNet, I have discovered that there are many features that people don&#8217;t know about. \u00a0One feature that people often ask about\u00a0is the ability to use MathSciNet from home or on\u00a0the road. \u00a0 Well, this is possible, but nobody noticed our clever icon. \u00a0 In this post, I will show you how to pair a laptop (or other portable device)\u00a0by going directly to our web page for remote access. \u00a0In the meantime, we will be\u00a0redesigning some of the pointers to these features so that you don&#8217;t have to go to a blog to find out how to connect.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If you have access to MathSciNet from your campus (university, institute, work, &#8230;), then you can pair a mobile device, such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone, with the campus account. \u00a0The pairing lasts for 90 days at a time and can be renewed so long as you remain affiliated with the subscribing institution. \u00a0In most cases, it takes three clicks. \u00a0 Here is how to do it.<\/p>\n<p>Bring the laptop or mobile device on campus and connect to the internet via the campus network (either wi-fi or hard-wired). \u00a0 Open a browser and go to\u00a0the &#8220;pair my device&#8221; page: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/pairing\/pair_my_device.html\">http:\/\/www.ams.org\/pairing\/pair_my_device.html<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here you will find\u00a0some requirements. \u00a0In particular, the pairing will work so long as you have internet access and your device has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>local storage<\/li>\n<li>cookies enabled<\/li>\n<li>JavaScript enabled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your device meets these criteria, click on &#8220;Yes, continue&#8221;. \u00a0 Here you are asked to agree to the terms. \u00a0If you do, click &#8220;Accept&#8221;
