{"id":285,"date":"2015-07-05T22:23:17","date_gmt":"2015-07-06T03:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/?p=285"},"modified":"2016-10-19T08:50:25","modified_gmt":"2016-10-19T13:50:25","slug":"theses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/2015\/07\/05\/theses\/","title":{"rendered":"Theses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many Ph.D. programs have an arrangement with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.proquest.com\/\">ProQuest<\/a>\u00a0whereby a copy of each dissertation (or Ph.D. thesis) is deposited with ProQuest and made available for ordering. \u00a0One way to find them is by going to the ProQuest <a href=\"http:\/\/dissexpress.umi.com\/dxweb\/search.html\">website<\/a>. \u00a0Another is to search using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/mathscinet\/search.html\">MathSciNet<\/a>!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>ProQuest handles dissertations and theses in many, many disciplines. \u00a0Their classification scheme is necessarily coarser than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/msc\/msc2010.html\">what we use at\u00a0<em>Mathematical Reviews<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0 \u00a0We receive bibliographic data about the theses published in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics. \u00a0When we receive the data from ProQuest, there are no\u00a0Mathematics Subject Classifications (MSCs) associated to them. \u00a0So we have used the &#8220;MSC&#8221; field in the MathSciNet search as the placeholder for the &#8220;Thesis&#8221; flag.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you find a thesis? \u00a0One way is just to do a search in MathSciNet and have the thesis turn up as part of the search. \u00a0However, if you really want to find just the thesis, then you have to use one of MathSciNet&#8217;s hidden tricks. \u00a0Here is an example.<\/p>\n<p>A famous thesis in number theory is John Tate&#8217;s, written under the direction of Emil Artin at Princeton. \u00a0Wikipedia even has its own <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tate's_thesis\">entry<\/a> for it! \u00a0Here is how to find it in MathSciNet. \u00a0In the Author field, enter &#8220;tate, jo*&#8221;. \u00a0In the MSC Primary\/Secondary field, enter &#8220;thesis&#8221;. \u00a0(It also works in the MSC Primary field.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-Tate-Thesis-search.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-303\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-Tate-Thesis-search.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot Tate Thesis search\" width=\"717\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-Tate-Thesis-search.png 717w, https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-Tate-Thesis-search-300x100.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 717px) 100vw, 717px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The result is:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-Tate-Thesis-result.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-291\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-Tate-Thesis-result.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot Tate Thesis - result\" width=\"671\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-Tate-Thesis-result.png 671w, https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-Tate-Thesis-result-300x89.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you click the link <span style=\"color: #993300\"><a style=\"color: #993300\" href=\"http:\/\/search.proquest.com\/docview\/304411725\">Thesis<\/a><\/span>, you jump to the ProQuest website:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-Tate-Thesis-ProQuest.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-292\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-Tate-Thesis-ProQuest.png\" alt=\" Tate Thesis on ProQuest\" width=\"699\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-Tate-Thesis-ProQuest.png 699w, https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/07\/Screen-Shot-Tate-Thesis-ProQuest-300x110.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 699px) 100vw, 699px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From here, you can order a copy, either as a PDF download or in one of several printed formats.<\/p>\n<p>MathSciNet began listing ProQuest theses and dissertations in October 2010. As of July 5, 2015, there are 76,413 such items\u00a0in MathSciNet. \u00a0For the year 2014, we loaded 1,950 theses into our database. period have been added to MathSciNet, thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.numdam.org\/\">NUMDAM<\/a>. \u00a0You can still find them by using &#8220;thesis&#8221; in the MSC field. \u00a0If you want to specifically find one of these theses, then put the work &#8220;numdam&#8221;
