Mathematical Reviews<\/em> has a program for extending the reach of the database to include material from the various retrodigitization projects by libraries, institutions, and publishers. \u00a0Many of these fall under the umbrella of the World Digital Mathematics Library (WDML)<\/a>, which seems to be becoming known as the Global Digital Mathematics Library<\/a>, sponsored by the IMU. \u00a0The origin of the WDML is Ulf\u00a0Rehmann<\/a>‘s DML<\/a>, hosted at the University of Bielefeld. \u00a0Items in MathSciNet that are part of this program are flagged with the icon\u00a0\"\"<\/a>. \u00a0Incorporating a digitized journal into the DML means that a search in MathSciNet can\u00a0return items from the digitized journal, even if it predates the beginning of Mathematical Reviews.<\/em><\/p>\n

For example, if you search for Cayley as an author and ask to have “quartic” in the title of the paper:<\/p>\n

You can see one of the newest stars of the program in the first four items: the\u00a0Journal f\u00fcr die Reine und Angewandte Mathematik<\/a><\/em>, also known as Crelle’s Journal. \u00a0Last week, the staff at\u00a0Mathematical Reviews<\/em> completed the uploading and checking of the data for Crelle’s Journal<\/a>. \u00a0The “checking” took a long time since the journal has been around for a long time, with the first issue published in 1826. \u00a0The digitization was done by de Gruyter<\/a>, who also provided us with the data.<\/p>\n

Two other important journals that started in the 19th century also show up in the list of Cayley’s work on\u00a0quartics: \u00a0Mathematische Annalen<\/a><\/em> and the\u00a0Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society<\/a>. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

There is another wonderful thing hidden in this list of results. \u00a0In all of the items, there is an active link marked\u00a0Article<\/span>. \u00a0If you click on that, you go to the actual article by Cayley! \u00a0Indeed, that is a major reason for the effort! \u00a0By incorporating Crelle’s Journal,\u00a0Math. Annalen<\/em>,\u00a0Proc. London Math. Soc.<\/em>, and many others into MathSciNet, you can now search the old literature and, in a matter of a couple of clicks, end up at the original article. \u00a0You can read more about the program on the MathSciNet help page<\/a>. \u00a0Note that\u00a0clicking on the\u00a0\"\"<\/a>icon brings you to the help entry on the DML.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, if you want to go exploring collections\u00a0of digitized publications in the mathematical sciences on your own, you can go to the\u00a0AMS Digital Mathematics Registry<\/a>, which is maintained by\u00a0Mathematical Reviews<\/em> staff.<\/p>\n
