{"id":237,"date":"2015-06-09T22:25:18","date_gmt":"2015-06-10T03:25:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/?p=237"},"modified":"2015-06-11T09:52:44","modified_gmt":"2015-06-11T14:52:44","slug":"mathscinet-moving-forward-by-moving-backward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/2015\/06\/09\/mathscinet-moving-forward-by-moving-backward\/","title":{"rendered":"MathSciNet: Moving forward by moving backward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Mathematical Reviews<\/em> has a program for extending the reach of the database to include material from the various retrodigitization projects by libraries, institutions, and publishers. \u00a0Many of these fall under the umbrella of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mathunion.org\/ceic\/wdml\/\">World Digital Mathematics Library (WDML)<\/a>, which seems to be becoming known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.wias-berlin.de\/imu-icm-panel-wdml\/2014\/08\/28\/the-global-digital-mathematical-library-working-group-gdml-wg\/\">Global Digital Mathematics Library<\/a>, sponsored by the IMU. \u00a0The origin of the WDML is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.math.uni-bielefeld.de\/~rehmann\/\">Ulf\u00a0Rehmann<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.math.uni-bielefeld.de\/~rehmann\/DML\/dml_links.html\">DML<\/a>, hosted at the University of Bielefeld. \u00a0Items in MathSciNet that are part of this program are flagged with the icon\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/06\/Screen-Shot-DML.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-263 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/06\/Screen-Shot-DML.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"87\" height=\"27\" \/><\/a>. \u00a0Incorporating a digitized journal into the DML means that a search in MathSciNet can\u00a0return items from the digitized journal, even if it predates the beginning of <em>Mathematical Reviews.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->For example, if you search for Cayley as an author and ask to have &#8220;quartic&#8221; in the title of the paper:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/06\/Screen-Shot-Cayley-and-quartic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-242\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/06\/Screen-Shot-Cayley-and-quartic.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot Cayley and quartic\" width=\"640\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/06\/Screen-Shot-Cayley-and-quartic.png 640w, https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/06\/Screen-Shot-Cayley-and-quartic-300x109.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The results begin as<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/06\/Screen-Shot-Cayley-Quartic-results.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-245\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/06\/Screen-Shot-Cayley-Quartic-results.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot Cayley Quartic results\" width=\"1046\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/06\/Screen-Shot-Cayley-Quartic-results.png 1046w, https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/06\/Screen-Shot-Cayley-Quartic-results-300x127.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2015\/06\/Screen-Shot-Cayley-Quartic-results-1024x434.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1046px) 100vw, 1046px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can see one of the newest stars of the program in the first four items: the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/view\/j\/crll.1826.issue-1\/crll.1826.1.1\/crll.1826.1.1.xml\">Journal f\u00fcr die Reine und Angewandte Mathematik<\/a><\/em>, also known as Crelle&#8217;s Journal. \u00a0Last week, the staff at\u00a0<em>Mathematical Reviews<\/em> completed the uploading and checking of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ams.org\/mathscinet\/search\/issues.html?jk=J_Reine_Angew_Math&amp;r=501&amp;extend=1\">data for Crelle&#8217;s Journal<\/a>. \u00a0The &#8220;checking&#8221; took a long time since the journal has been around for a long time, with the first issue published in 1826. \u00a0The digitization was done by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/\">de Gruyter<\/a>, who also provided us with the data.<\/p>\n<p>Two other important journals that started in the 19th century also show up in the list of Cayley&#8217;s work on\u00a0quartics: \u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/mrweb.mr.ams.org\/mathscinet\/search\/journaldoc.html?jc=MATHA\">Mathematische Annalen<\/a><\/em> and the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/mrweb.mr.ams.org\/mathscinet\/search\/journaldoc.html?jc=PROLM1\">Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society<\/a>. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is another wonderful thing hidden in this list of results. \u00a0In all of the items, there is an active link marked\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Article<\/span>. \u00a0If you click on that, you go to the actual article by Cayley! \u00a0Indeed, that is a major reason for the effort! \u00a0By incorporating Crelle&#8217;s Journal,\u00a0<em>Math. Annalen<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Proc. London Math.
