{"id":1893,"date":"2018-01-06T19:41:57","date_gmt":"2018-01-07T00:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/?p=1893"},"modified":"2018-01-06T19:41:57","modified_gmt":"2018-01-07T00:41:57","slug":"may-we-suggest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/2018\/01\/06\/may-we-suggest\/","title":{"rendered":"May we suggest&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MathSciNet now has an <strong>auto-suggest feature<\/strong> for Author Searches and Journal Searches.\u00a0 The feature uses the databases themselves to help you with your searches.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Author searches<\/h2>\n<p>When using <a href=\"https:\/\/mathscinet.ams.org\/mathscinet\/search.html\">MathSciNet<\/a>, clicking on the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/mathscinet.ams.org\/mathscinet\/searchauthors.html\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Author<\/span><\/strong><\/a>&#8221; tab switches you from doing a search for published items to doing a search for authors.\u00a0 Author searches are very important, but getting the right name can be tricky.\u00a0 (See <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/2015\/09\/14\/who-wrote-that\/\">this earlier post<\/a> on the subject of authors and names.)\u00a0 When you start typing a name in the Author search, after a couple of letters have been entered, MathSciNet begins offering suggestions.\u00a0 The suggestions are coming from instant queries of the Mathematical Reviews author database.\u00a0 For example, this is what what I now see when typing &#8220;Serre&#8221; into an Author search:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2017\/12\/Autosuggest-Author.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1902 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2017\/12\/Autosuggest-Author.png\" alt=\"Screen shot of the auto suggest feature when searching the Author database\" width=\"639\" height=\"581\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2017\/12\/Autosuggest-Author.png 639w, https:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/files\/2017\/12\/Autosuggest-Author-300x273.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you have a list of suggestions, you can either hit &#8220;Enter&#8221; to ignore the suggestion and search using what you have typed so far or click on one of them to execute an Author search using those terms.\u00a0 It is important to note that the result of choosing a selection is launching a search.\u00a0 Many times, you will have a unique match, but other times there will be multiple matches.\u00a0 For instance, selecting &#8220;Serre F&#8221; from the example above matches two authors: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/mathscinet.ams.org\/mathscinet\/MRAuthorID\/536991\">Serre, F.<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/mathscinet.ams.org\/mathscinet\/MRAuthorID\/1179367\">Serre, Fran\u00e7ois<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<h2>Journal searches<\/h2>\n<p>Help with Journal searches is particularly useful since many journal titles are similar.\u00a0 We have roughly 1,800 active journals in MathSciNet, plus many historical journals (which might just be older versions of current journals).\u00a0 Lots of journals have the word &#8220;Journal&#8221; in the title.\u00a0 &#8220;Mathematical&#8221; is also popular.\u00a0 Skimming <a href=\"https:\/\/mathscinet.ams.org\/msnhtml\/serials.pdf\">this list<\/a> can give you an idea of similarities of titles.<\/p>\n<p>The auto-suggest feature for Journal searches works similarly to that for Author searches. Click on the &#8220;<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mathscinet.ams.org\/mathscinet\/searchjournals.html\"><strong>Journal<\/strong><\/a><\/span>&#8221; tab to switch to doing a search for journals.\u00a0When typing in a search word or phrase, after you type a couple of letters, MathSciNet starts offering suggestions.\u00a0\u00a0The suggestions are coming from instant queries of the Mathematical Reviews journal database.\u00a0 For example, here is what I see after typing &#8220;functional&#8221; in the example produces six results.\u00a0 Some are older incarnations of the current &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/mathscinet.ams.org\/mathscinet\/search\/journaldoc.html?id=3612\">Journal of Functional Analysis<\/a>&#8220;, but you also get\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mathscinet.ams.org\/mathscinet\/search\/journaldoc.html?id=6371\">Journal of Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Differential Equations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>We hope these two new features help you to use MathSciNet more effectively.\u00a0 We have been beta testing them in-house at Mathematical Reviews for a while now and have found both to be tremendously helpful.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>And, if you are going to the <a href=\"http:\/\/jointmathematicsmeetings.org\/jmm\">Joint Mathematical Meetings<\/a> in San Diego, I hope you will come see Mathematical Reviews and MathSciNet at the AMS booth in the exhibit hall.\u00a0 My <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ams.org\/beyondreviews\/2017\/12\/30\/mathematical-reviews-at-the-jmm-in-san-diego\/\">previous post<\/a> has information about our activities there.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 0px;
