I just came back from the Mathematical Congress of the Americas<\/a> in Montreal. \u00a0 It was an intense week of mathematics. \u00a0Besides having excellent invited and plenary lectures, there were 70 special sessions! \u00a0There were five plenary lectures: \u00a0Manuel del Pino<\/a> (Universidad de Chile);\u00a0Shafrira Goldwasser<\/a> (MIT); Peter Ozsvath<\/a> (Princeton University);\u00a0Yuval Peres<\/a> (Microsoft Research); and\u00a0Kannan Soundararajan<\/a> (Stanford University). \u00a0Erik Demaine<\/a> (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and\u00a0\u00c9tienne Ghys<\/a> (\u00c9cole Normale Sup\u00e9rieure de Lyon) gave well-received public lectures. \u00a0The list of invited speakers is here<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Demaine advocated for collaboration, pointing out that he had written papers with 429 different people<\/a>. \u00a0 \u00a0Not all of those papers are mathematical, but here is the list of\u00a0his 299 co-authors in MathSciNet<\/a>. \u00a0 In case you are wondering, MathSciNet’s collaboration distance<\/a> between the two public lecturers is 4:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
